Worship Opens Your Mind to Receive Wisdom
Message Date: April 25, 2010 / By David Youngren
Ephesians 5: 15 See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, 16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord
Christ is wisdom, and Christ lives inside us. So if we lack wisdom, the answer is never further away than our heart. But how do we tap into the wisdom of God that’s in us?
Just because we share space with a person, it doesn’t mean there is actually intimacy. It’s only through intimacy that you hear the other person’s deepest thoughts and feelings. It’s the same with Christ. He is always with us, but we often ignore His presence. We never draw from His wisdom as we are too busy doing our own thing. Many believers never even acknowledge His presence. Other Christians spend so much time trying to earn His presence that they never even have the time to ask Him for wisdom. So how can we draw from the wisdom that’s within us continually?
Worship is a way for us to connect with the wisdom of God. The literally meaning of worship is “to kiss.” It speaks of intimacy. When we are worshipping the Lord, we not only acknowledge His presence, but we are also drawing wisdom that comes from that intimate relationship.
It’s amazing what happens when we start singing songs of praise, and we simply just make a melody in our hearts unto the Lord. Our hearts are silenced from all the external noise and now we can hear the voice of the Spirit, who communicates the mind of Christ.
Not only do we gain wisdom from hearing the voice of the Spirit, but our distracted minds are calmed and refreshed. Sometimes we have so many voices around us that we cannot hear anything clearly. We are confused, and we are not quite sure how to react to a situation. Many believers have so many voices in their own head that they are not quite sure what to think. And then they make decisions based on the wrong voice.
That’s why every believer needs to clear their calendars before every important decision they make and just worship the LORD. It’s when all the worries, fears, confusions and reasonings are gone that we can clearly hear the voice of Christ Jesus by the Holy Spirit. And His voice is filled with the wisdom from God that the human mind cannot properly comprehend. But following His wisdom will bring happiness and victory, and will put us in the path of success.
Application:
- Discuss times when you lacked wisdom and you began to worship the Lord, how it changed your heart and opened your mind to receive wisdom
- Take some time to worship the Lord today and sing songs of praise to the Lord
